Tim, hard at work in the office.
This weekend, we leave the capital city, Accra, for what is reportedly one of the best beach towns in Ghana: Busua. July 1st (also sister Teresa’s birthday—“Happy Birthday, Mini!”) is a holiday in Ghana, so it’s a three-day well-deserved weekend. A number of British diplomats invited us to go with them to an eco-lodge on the beach, and we’re suckers for a free ride (the Brits come equipped with beautiful air-conditioned Land Rovers). So we’re off, celebrating Tim’s birthday on Sunday on what is hopefully a fecal sludge-free beach (although the rip tide is reportedly a literal killer).
Having birthdays in new locations, let alone new countries, is never the same as having a party with friends and family (we were reminiscing on last year’s birthday celebrated with John & Julia, Peter, and Andy at Beer Fest in Seattle (and it was cold enough that we needed to wear sweaters!)), but hopefully this year’s birthday brings us together with new potential friends in an exotic locale. If all we do is sip coconut juice with a splash of rum on the beach, it will have been a successful occasion.
Happy Birthday to you, Timmy Wade!
